Logo Contest for Luxuria

When we launched Luxuria last wee, I sent out a notice about our logo contest to bloggers and our group. Unfortunately, I just realized that I failed to post about the contest on our blog, oops! Because of this, I will be extending the contest deadline a few days. The new deadline is October 10th. The rules are below or you can pick up a notecard in our store.

Luxuria needs a new logo and after spending hours and hours designing this new collection, my mind is not in the right space for creating a new logo. I don't want to settle for something that I will not be happy with long term and decided to take up a suggestion from a blogger - have a logo contest!

The winner will get 2000 lindens and the entire collection of Luxuria lingerie - every color of every design in the opening collection.

I think the name of the brand says a lot about what I want in a logo. It needs to be modern, luxurious, elegant and upscale. I want it to say the brand is cosmopolitan and fresh and that's what the logo has to portray. Although specific colors are not required, it would be helpful to remember that store colors are black, white and light pink.

So some rules:

1. The Aspect Ratio must be 3:2
2. Your entriy must be submitted to Roslin Petion by 11 PM PDT, October 10, 2010.
3. You must drop a full perm texture as your contest entry, but you must be willing to provide a non-merged PSD file of the logo.
4. The logo must be a graphic desgin that incorporates the store name. No photos or screen shots. No avatar photos.
5. All original content. There can be no images, etc. that you don't have appropriate licensing for.

Frustration, Theft, and Communication Issues

A few days ago, Hybrid Ansar alerted me to a suspcious avatar by the name of Medussa Neutron. This person had ripped off a few people, including Hybrid's friend Ikaru Aichi. What's worse is that this person had done this under other accounts previously and when caught, just created Medussa to continue with their theft. When I looked at the pictures of the item in question and Medussa's Xstreet listings, it was clear to me that she had indeed stolen the texture from my Tease corsets and used them in her own designs. My corset was 100% hand drawn and all of the details lined up perfectly with Medusa's corset: wrinkles, hooks, boning. When I logged onto SL today, Hybrid asked me if I had filed a DMCA yet because Ikaru had been IP banned and they believed it was as a result of retaliation against Ikaru for filing the DMCA. Hybrid asked me to put in a good word for Ikaru and mention my experience and I offered to do so as a courtesy.
My problem is just how do I go about communicating with LL about this issue? I can not file an Abuse Report about the theft because Medussa is no longer listed in search and that is a requirement for an AR, I can not file a DMCA on an account that no longer exists about items no longer available on Xstreet, I can't file a ticket because my issue does not fit into any of the categories and an incorrect listing will be ignored, I do not have a premium account so I can't file under avatar issue, and the 800 number is for billing issues only. If there is another avenue of communication with LL, I'd appreciate it if someone let me know.
All I can do right now is show you all the pictures and ask you to keep an eye out for this person's work in the future since they are a repeat offender.

Now that this is out of the way, I'd like to address something else. It came to my attention yesterday that there was a misunderstanding about my creative process, specifically, in relation to this poll. Some people were under the impression that I would be copying the design exactly and/or photosourcing it. When I created my poll/last blog, I assumed that everyone who reads my blog and plurk are friends and/or customers and as such, are familiar with how I work. Since I've learned this is not the case, let me explain my process to you all.

The majority of the time when I begin a new project, I look at magazines, blogs, etc, to draw inspiration from. Often, I have some theme/look in mind and assemble a variety of items on an inspiration board and draw a bit from each one. On some occasions (like this one) I'm at a total loss and I poll folks in plurk and randomly pull images that appeal to me and then systematically narrow it down to whatever I think will work best in sl and be most appealing. I do not sketch because I can't draw anything better than a stick figure. In fact, I don't 'draw' my textures. I create my clothing by making a series of selections and shapes and using various tools to achieve the effect I am looking for. Even when basing a design off of just 1 image, I still like to alter the look to suit both SL and my own personal taste. I NEVER do exact replicas of rl designs for my own personal reasons. That said, it would be perfectly legal for me to copy a rl design because in the US, unless you are copying logos or distinctive features from a design (like a patented super special zipper or a trade marked print like Burberry plaid) it is perfectly legal to 'knockoff' a design.

When it comes to the actual execution of a design, I do NOT photosource a whole image and I rarely photosource elements in the design. Out of all my designs, only 3 contain any photosourcing. Without going too much into ip laws, I will say that I take greater care than I legally am bound to when sourcing for my designs and all of my sources have been in public domain. I hope this clears up any confusion and please let me know if you are interested in seeing and reading more about my process. <3

Celebrate the End of the Season with Summer Cocktails

For those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, the dog days of summer are winding down. It's a perfect time to indulge in girly cocktails and just unwind and if you could use a little relaxation, boy do we have the release for you. The inspiration for this set came from a color trend report in the UK edition of Harper's Bazaar. Really rich and bright colors are what's hot this summer and the colors made us think of summer cocktails. This is what led us to the center of our collection, our Cocktail Bar. This bar is chock full of goodies and I'm pretty sure that some of these features are unique never done in sl before. My personal favorite item in the set is a weapons grade soda siphon. CJ and I had tons of fun testing that one out.

Of course, you want to drink your summer cocktails in style, that brings us to our two dresses. The Summer Cocktails dress features sculptie sleeves and an obi style sculptie belt and comes in 6 yummy cocktail colors. The other dress, Summer Cocktails Mini, is total modern goddess with it's asymmetric neckline and prim mini skirt. This dress also comes in the same 6 colors as the other dress which means there are some mixing and matching possibilities!

Of course, if you want to look perfectly polished, you need the final touch - new makeup made to coordinate with the Summer Cocktails dresses. I've created 6 new makeups in 3 skin tones based in our Audrey line. The makeups are based on a few different looks suggested by friends, Haver Cole, Aderyn Verwood, and possibly a few others that I forgot! They all have winged liner and I used 3 different lip textures so there's something for everyone.

Through the years, I've discovered a lot of stores and groups that interested me by looking at the groups in people's profiles. This is why we've always refused to start up a subscription based group. That said, we do understand that there are never enough group slots free for all of our needs. CJ and I have been in the skin business for 3 years. We've released countless makeups under 7 skin lines and yes, we've been through 2 brand names. This, however, is not a rebranding. We are no longer just about skins. Along with our new name, 5th & Oxford will bring a diverse range of products which draw from the most current trends in fashion and design, for both women, men, AND your home. While our focus and style will be shifting, our mission as content creators will remain the same. CJ and I are about slavish attention to the details and perfectionism.

We look forward to expanding into new territory in the coming months. Because we've always been known primarily as skin makers, we thought it only fitting that our first product release under this new brand would be skins. CJ and I are primarily known for our skins, it's the majority of our content and it's what we've been doing for the longest time. While I've contributed to the 'designing'of our clothing and over time, I've been more involved in the execution, we've never released anything that I did all on my own from start to finish. About two months ago, with CJ's help, I began a crash course on clothing making. What you see here is the first thing that I've created that I think is good enough to sell under the Fleur brand. I know there are a few minor flaws with it but I'm still pretty proud of how far I've come in just two months.

I was originally going to name the dress First Date, in reference to it being my first piece of clothing but then I was thinking that neckline was a bit immodest for a first date, so, Second Date was born. As simple as the design is, I put a lot of work into the details, the folds of the skirt, the fabric texture, the highlights, pleating on the belt, wrinkles, etc. -all those little details add up to a lot of work. I hope you all appreciate those little details but most of all, I hope it makes you feel as pretty as I do when wearing it.

A year ago, Samara Barzane joined Fleur. She was full of ideas and enthusiasm and has proven to be both a loyal employee and a good friend. Unfortunately, Sam is cutting back on her working hours in SL and will no longer be with us, effective the first of March. New China Skin: L'Oiseau

CJ and I have long admired the work of hyasynth Tiramisu and soon after personal introductions, I had the good fortune of learning that she is not only a talented content creator but a wonderful person and a good friend. So when hya told me that she had created a lovely set named Fleur and was wondering if I wouldn't mind creating a complimentary skin, the word 'no' slipped from my vocabulary. She even sent over a psd file of the brocade pattern to use on the skin (you can see the detail I borrowed from Hya in the eyeliner that extends past the corner of the eyes! How do you honor someone who honors you? Well, we've returned the favor (sort of) and named the skins L'Oiseau for the little birdy behind Silent Sparrow. You can find the Fleur set and the rest of the Ms. Tiramisu's creations at silentsparrow the L'Oiseau skins will be there in the next day or so or if you are impatient, you can find them in the park at the flagship Fleur .

As some of you may have heard, there has been a devastating bushfire in Australia and Autumn Hykova and Dakota Buck have organized to raise funds for the Australian Red Cross. We've set up a donation kiosk at Fleur and they can be found in other locations throughout SL. Also, some content creators have been creating special items and/or promising to donate income from sales to the fund. Fleur is pleased to announce the release of their Limited Edition Valentine Skins now available in the Shoujo Shop at Fleur. We asked our update group members and Fleur Insiders which skin they wanted for the Valentine skin and they chose Shoujo! The results are delightful.

The soft glow of Shoujo enhances the the romantic feel of these skins. Both the Valentine Pink and Valentine Red are available in the three Shoujo skintones, Lotus, Lily and the newest, Azalea. When we were planning our Allure line, I did a lot of research on makeup looks to gain some inspiration. I poured through pictures from runway shows on the internet, sorted through my inspiration folder filled with pictures of makeups pulled from magazines, and made frequent trips to the bookstore looking for a new book that struck my fancy. One day I came across Eye Candy by Linda Mason. This is where I got my inspiration for our Smokin' makeup. For those curious about the book, it is full of some really fun, funky makeup looks and the models are fresh-faced, 'real' girls.

Fashion Forward: Fleur Allure Exotique Inspiration

While I don't consider myself a slave to fashion, I do follow it closely. I have a deep respect and admiration for clothing as an art form and because of this, I closely follow the launch of several of my favorite designers each season.

The inspiration for the Exotique makeup was from a runway look for Fall 08. Sadly, I can't remember what designer featured the look. What I love about this makeup is that while it is a little bit "exotic", it is still a very wearable evening/going out look for a young woman. The color palette for the first makeup came from the inspiration picture and the other two looks featured color combinations that I created.

I find that for the most part, runway makeup tends to be a great way to predict the seasons coming trends in makeup and serve as an inspiration for your own looks.

The Kitten makeup look began with a classic 50's style cat eye liner. It's a nice clean liquid eye liner that's not as thick as a 60s liner, nor as diffused and soft as a lot of modern cat eye liner looks are today. It's a style of eye makeup that's pretty much always in style, a true classic. I paired the eyes with 3 shades of semi-matte lipstick. The first shade is a very classic tomato red, the second is a shade of pink with a bit more of an 80s influence. The third shade was inspired by the winter 08 fashion trends, it is a very dark pink with a little bit of plum undertones.

Allure Bare

At the urging of Sam and Fury, I'm going to be doing a series of posts discussing the inspiration for each of the Allure makeup looks. For my first post, I thought it would be fitting to discuss our Bare set since it's our most basic Allure makeup.

To be fair, Bare is not exactly bare, it is really more of a 'no makeup' makeup look. I'm a serious makeup lover, even before I became a content creator. As some of you may know, I've a few years experience in cosmetics in RL but I've been passionate about makeup for as long as I can remember. That said, sometimes, a girl wants to let her true self shine through. Or in my case, sometimes a girl gets tired of the 'full face' makeup look that's expected of her at work and feels like going for the bare minimum in her free time.

All three makeups feature a little bit of liner applied close to the lash line. The first makeup in bare is just a light, slightly pink tinted lip gloss and a hint of blush. The second look has a more flushed cheek, the kind you would see after someone comes in from the cold and the gloss is turned down, more of a chapstick, than a proper gloss. The final look is what I tend to sport most summers, freckles with a warmer toned lip gloss.

Now that Santa has come and gone at the Fleur sim it is time to contemplate dressing for New Year's Eve. We hope you all partook of the Lucky Christmas Stocking, but life marches on.

There are marvelous dresses available on the grid, but very few creators make gloves and, for my money, Fleur makes the best. They are available in many colors, both basic and pastel. But this Holiday Season Roslin and CJ have released their fabulous gloves in a Brights Pack. Priced at L$100 per color and L$600 for the full shebang, these are a "must-have" for the holiday round of parties.

The colors include Lemon, Saffron, Cerise, Crimson, Violet, Electric, Cerulean and [not pictured] Emerald.

We at Fleur Skins wish you all a very Happy Holiday Season.

We invite you to visit us often during the coming year to see what's new at Fleur, where we have the widest variety of skin styles and makeups on the grid, with something for every taste and price point.

It's been a busy year at Fleur. Roslin and CJ launched two new skin lines: Boutique, with both Parfait and Shojo makeups, and the the glorious hybrid skin, Allure, now with 10 makeups. Fleur collaborated with Nicky Ree, hyasynth Tiramisu and others as well as participating in the first Black Swan event and contributing to Relay for Life. And now Fleur has added it's first new clothes in a while!

Not content to work with Roslin on the skins, CJ has provided us with 3 new builds this year. Each build was special and of the quality one expects from him, but I have to admit I am loving the current SoHo/New York City build the most. Come on over and enjoy the ambience!

This year has also seen the enlargement of the Fleur staff. First I wheedled my way into Fleur to help with publicity and customer service. With the Allure launch it became clear that we needed more help, so we hired 5 Customer Service Associates. One of them, Fury Stapleton, took over my tasks when I was away and did a smashing job. So now she's my assistant working with Roslin & CJ on marketing. We also started the Fleur Insiders -- 10 lovely avatars who represent the variety that Fleur is. I've been working with them and they are a delight!

One of the joys of working for Fleur has been all the wonderful people I have met this year! Don't hesitate to contact Fury, me or any of the CSAs if you have questions or need help!

Biba

CJ and I hate revisiting past work, doing rehashes, etc. but sometimes there is call for it. As previously mentioned in this blog, Biba was a makeup that I created for our Vivant line. We had discontinued the makeup to make room for newer ones but it always remained one of my favorites. Not only do I prefer our Allure line to the Vivant as a base skin, I also wanted to improve upon the makeup. It was wonderful to see how many people were receptive to the idea of refitting the the Biba makeup. When creating the 3 different makeup palettes, I took into consideration some of the suggestions made by the Fleur Insiders and group members. Thank you everyone for your wonderful feedback and I hope you all enjoy this latest release.

Sneak Preview

TaP Shepard dropped one of the, as yet, unreleased Fleur Allure Biba skins on me last night. As soon as I put it on my pixels I just knew I had to shoot and I knew exactly the dress and hair I wanted to go with it.

The Biba skin has the smokey eyes of the 1920's with luscious Hollywood lips too. It just screams glamour. This make up is now teamed with the fabulous Allure body which is, in my honest opinion, the best hybrid skin on the grid.

Roslin has outdone herself and paid true homage to her inspiration.

I can't wait for the finished product to be released...bring on Biba!

I've mentioned before that the late Kevyn Aucoin has been a huge source of inspiration for many of our makeup looks at Fleur. One of my favorite looks of his was the Biba which inspired a Vivant skin by the same name.

The Biba makeup has always been one of my favorites from the line and apparently a lot of my friends miss it too. Then a few days ago, Achariya posted a look using Biba and we've had a number of requests for the skin. I thought it would be a good time to update the look and fit it to our allure line.

I pulled the shadow in a bit closer to the corner of inner eye so it's closer to the inspiration look. I also tried to extend the shadow further up and out in the area above the crease. The changes are very subtle to the eye but it was a huge struggle to accomplish. As anyone who is familar with that area of the avatar mesh will know, it's a very difficult area to work with. I struggled to extend it and keep the shadow from getting messy or get kinked. I also went and added a little bit more blush and toned down the highlight in the center of the lid. I'd love to hear some feedback from you all and maybe even suggestions on the color combos for other versions of this makeup look.

The clothing shop has reopened and to celebrate, we've cooked up a little something to make you feel all warm and cozy. Our Fair Isle sweater dress features metal clasps on the bodice and it is being released alongside our ribbed turtleneck and fair isle over the knee socks. All items come in 6 colors and multiple clothing layers to ensure ease of mix and matching.

Fleur Skins reopened the sim yesterday and many of you dropped by to explore, chat and try/buy the new Parfait and Shojo skins, including the new Azalea skintone that everyone is raving about. The snow fell gently as we all enjoyed the results of the talents of CJ Carnot and Roslin Petion.

Our CSAs were on hand to help as were a number of our Fleur Insiders. All looked smashing in their newly released skins :)

Just a reminder that every line has its own store. The goth/specialty skins share a space with a few delights from ~silent sparrow~. (hyasynth Tiramisu was the inspiration for our China Allure skintone.) Free accessory packs will be available soon in each store. The Divas' Halloween Special is now showing at cinema fleur. Follow the instructions on the sign in the theatre. Take a seat and enjoy:) Also don't miss Park Gallery at Fleur and the adjacent coffee shop. Fleur has *everything* on one sim to make your skin shopping comfortable and enjoyable.

The new Store Cards are also available. You can buy them from the red signs in each shop. The signs also explain what they are and how to use them. The bigger denominations give you a nice discount on multiple skins, thus replacing the old 3 packs. This way YOU choose your 3 pack.

It's ALMOST Time -- New Skins, New Build at Fleur

In two hours, at 2pm SLT, the Fleur sim will reopen its doors to you. CJ has outdone himself again with a New York City/Soho build. It *is* winter and the snow is falling so bundle up a bit ;)

Each of our skin lines now has their own shop AND there is a bargain basement. Price points have changed a bit. Allure and Boutique skin lines are now L$1000, including the new Parfait Trois and Shoujo Da ni ban makeups AND the new Shoujo Azalea skin tone we have been telling you about. Vivants remain at L$500, BUT some older ones are nicely discounted at L$250 in the Bargain Basement. Just follow the arrow!

You will find the Gothique & Drow Vivants in their own shop along with the Allure China skintone skins. There is also a small selection of ~silent sparrow~ goodies thanks to the kindness of hyasynth Tiramisu. She has included the Suzume dresses that go with the Suzume Allure China skins.

Additionally we are hoping to debut a new gift card system today that gives you a big discount when buying more than one skin. Fleur Reopens Saturday 2pm SLT with New Boutique Skins

We have also "relocated" to lower Manhattan, NYC and will be residing in a wonderful new CJ Carnot build reminiscent of SoHo and Greenwich Village.

Each of our skin lines will have their own boutique, as will the clothing and accessories. The pale skin tones will share a shop with a sampling of ~silent sparrow~ delights. We also will have The Fleur Cinema, where we will be showing the previous Divas series, while waiting for the new one. Next to the cinema will be the coffee cafe and gallery, with room to sit, sip your latte and enjoy the art.

The new skins will include 6 new makeups for The Boutique Line Parfait Trois, in which Parfait grows up a bit and gets some "glam." Shoujo also has 6 new makeups AND, as you requested, a NEW slightly darker skintone, Azalea. All Shoujo makeups will be available in the new skintones.

Starting at 2pm SLT tomorrow we will be open for you to visit and try on the new skins, enjoy a cup of coffee and listen to some wonderful New Tork themed music. Many of our CSAs and Fleur Insiders will be present to welcome you to the NEW Fleur, where you will find a style and price that suits you!

A New Tone for Allure -- China!

Just in time for your Halloween Weekend, Roslin and CJ have released 6 new makeups in the palest of pale Allure tones, China. Orginally made for hyasynth Tiramisu, these gothly beauties are now available at the Fleur store and will be available tomorrow at ~silent sparrow~.

There are six makeups, each with 3 variations, enough ghostly presence, for everyone's inner goth, or Commedia dell'arte character. They are China Coeur, Femme Fatale, Licentious, Mystique, Perish and Sinuous.

Introducing Your Allure CSAs

With a number of you asking for advice and assistance with the new Allure skins from Fleur we have decided to hire several of our Allure Launch Models as Customer Service Assistants to help you. As models they are experienced at tweaking shapes and putting *that* look together with the new Allure makeups.

They will be in the shop regularly throughout the week. We'll post a partial schedule as soon as we have one. But each CSA will announce in the Fleur Update Group Chat that she is in the store. While, of course, they will glady answer any Fleur-related questions, their particular expertise is to help you find YOUR Allure :)

So please give a warm welcome to the first Fleur Allure CSAs -- Noena Merlin, Fury Stapleton, Cordi Biddle and Rosie Barthelmess. Look for their "Allure Model" tag in the store soon.

We had a super party at Fleur yesterday, with DJ duckyfresh Watanbe, 9 super Flickr winners as our Allure Models** and all of you who came to help us celebrate the debut of an astonishing new skin line from the talented pixels of CJ Carnot and Roslin Petion.

Allure is all its hype promised. A delicious new base and body, 6 new scrumptious skintones and 18 makeups overall! Since I was busy talking with all of you and with the models, I didn't take any pictures, so here are a few of the pictures of our Jolie Fleur Flickr members have been posting wearing the new Allure skins. Please feel free to post yours as we will be refreshing the store pictures from time to time!

And thanks again to Ran Garrigus and Umbra Lunardi for suggestioning the name for the new line. It couldn't have been more perfect :)
